Nationhood Campaign

12/11/06 - A Nation within a Nation, or a Nation without a Nation?
The NLDL and the people of Newfoundland and Labrador request that the Parliament of Canada recognize our province as a “Nation within a united Canada”. An equivalent motion regarding Quebec was adopted on November 27, 2006 by a vote of 266-16. We believe that having once been an independent nation in our own right, the people of Newfoundland and Labrador deserve to be given this designation and acceptance by the Canadian government and the people of Canada.

Our music, literature, art, history, and way of life are unique. To say that Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are not unique and worthy of being accepted as a nation is to say that a society developed over hundreds of years has become unrecognizable after only 57 years of confederation… and that would be a sad statement for the people of Canada to make.

11/15/06 - Fixed Link Presentation
The provincial government recently released a discussion paper on planning Labrador's transportation needs. Leading up to public consultations the government is accepting submissions from concerned groups and individuals as input to the planning process.

The NLDL has presented government with a submission identifying the need for a fixed link between Labrador and the island portion of the province.

There are many benefits to development of a fixed link, not the least of which is the ability to move power, oil, gas, minerals and goods easily between both parts of the province. We believe that this alone will help improve the ability of both areas to attract business and industrial development and in turn improve the overall economic and employment situation, key objectives of the plan being discussed.

09/20/06 - Press Release
The NLDL would like to inform its members that our group has sent a letter to the Federal Minister of Fisheries, Lloyla Hearn, requesting his support in a UN effort to ban bottom trawling fishing gear.

It has become clear that this method of fishing has a very destructive impact on the ocean floor and the NLDL feels that it should be completely banned from use.
